Worth reading before you sail
- Three separate fees: Parks Pass, camping/Penitentiary, commercial ferry — never one combined “island fee.”
- No shops, cafés or rubbish collection. Pack food, treat water, pack rubbish out.
- Painted Cliffs: safest within ~2 hours of low tide; no clifftop access.
- Bishop and Clerk: avoid the steep summit in high wind. Last ferry is absolute.
- Annual maintenance closure usually late June / early July — verify. No public vehicles on the island.

Do I need a Parks Pass for Maria Island National Park?
Yes. A Tasmania Parks Pass is required, including for private boat or plane arrivals. The Encounter Maria Island ferry is a separate commercial ticket. Camping and the Penitentiary are a third fee system. There is no extra walk permit for established day walks. Daily Pass planning figure commonly published: $49.15/vehicle (up to 8); children under 5 free — confirm live at the official fees page.
How do I get to Maria Island?
Drive the Tasman Highway (A3) to Triabunna — about 75–90 minutes from Hobart in light traffic. Check in at Maria Island Gateway, then the passenger ferry to Darlington takes around 45 minutes. Bookings essential at encountermaria.com.au. No public vehicles on the island.
What should I do first on a first visit?
Darlington World Heritage plus wildlife, then Painted Cliffs if a low-tide window sits inside your island hours. Otherwise Fossil Cliffs. Bishop and Clerk is a Grade 4 day that needs an early Hobart leave, low wind and a last-ferry buffer. Do not stack Mount Maria on a first day-return.
What are the ferry fares?
Reviewed 26 August 2026 on encountermaria.com.au: same-day return adult $59, concession $47.50, student/child $36.50, infant free. Overnight return adult $70, concession $59.50, student $47.50, child $43, infant free. Always verify live — fares change.
Are there shops or cafés on the island?
No. No shops, cafés or rubbish collection. Pack all food, treat water, pack rubbish out. Limited mobile. 000 needs reception; install Emergency+.
Is Bishop and Clerk a first-timer default?
No. Parks Tasmania: 11 km return, Grade 4, 4–5 hours walk from Darlington, exposed scramble, avoid the steep summit in high wind. A late Hobart leave is how people miss the last ferry.
