Bishop and Clerk operator’s guide: scramble, wind and the last ferry

How to walk Bishop and Clerk on Maria Island — 11 km return, Grade 4, Darlington start, bike limit, unfenced cliffs, and why a late Hobart leave fails. Desk research, not walked.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Parks Pass fees, official camping, Penitentiary bookings and the Encounter Maria Island ferry are never affiliated.

Bishop and Clerk is the walk people mean when they say they “did Maria Island properly.” Parks Tasmania publishes 11 km return, Grade 4, 4–5 hours walk: rough, steep, limited signage, unfenced cliffs, a dolerite scramble.

This is an unofficial operator’s note from published Parks Tasmania logistics — not a field-walk diary for this URL. Re-check the Bishop and Clerk page, park alerts and encountermaria.com.au the morning you go.

The walk starts at Darlington Settlement after the passenger ferry from Triabunna (~45 minutes). Hobart to the Gateway is about 75–90 minutes in light traffic. A late city breakfast is how this day fails before you see a column.

Day shape

Grassland and woodland first, then cliff-line country near Fossil Cliffs / Skipping Ridge, then scree and a scramble. Summit about 620 m. Freycinet can show on a clear day. Return the same way.

Turn around before the scramble if wind, energy or the ferry clock fails. That is still a good Maria Island day.

Named in published notes for a bishop in a mitre followed by a clergyman. Treat the columns as exposure, not a casual lookout. Unfenced sheer drops.

What not to stack

Mount Maria is a different start and an 8-hour class day. Painted Cliffs needs a tide window that may not sit after a late summit. Darlington wildlife is the evening product if you overnight — not a reason to miss the last sailing.

Fossil Cliffs is the honest neighbour, not a warm-up that still leaves five hours for the scramble on a tight ferry.

Do not invent a loop onto Mount Maria. Out-and-back. The ferry still leaves from Darlington.

Published 4–5 hours is walking time. Add Gateway check-in, ~45 minutes on the water, scramble caution, and a last-ferry buffer. Leave Hobart early. A 10am CBD departure is how this walk eats the sailing.

Same-day return adult fare reviewed $59 on 26 August 2026 on encountermaria.com.au — always verify live. Bookings essential. Parks Pass is separate (Daily Pass commonly published $49.15/vehicle — verify).

Unplanned overnight needs food and a legal bed you already arranged. Do not invent a Penitentiary room or a Darlington site from the scree.

Hazards that change the plan

High unfenced cliffs, steep boulders, rock scree, unprotected edges, wind gusts on the summit. Parks Tasmania: do not attempt the steep summit route in high winds.

Limited mobile. 000 needs reception where it exists. Emergency+ when you have signal. Screenshot the timetable on home Wi-Fi.

No shops, treat water, pack rubbish out. Pack for an exposed day even if the jetty is mild.

Kids, dogs, turnaround

Not a family default. Older, cliff-sensible walkers only with adult ratios that actually work. Dogs are not in the national park (Parks Tasmania). Assistance animals follow official policy.

Turn around at any point. Before the scree scramble is the planned shorter day. If wind is shoving you on the columns, reverse — the summit is not compulsory.

This site does not invent live closures. Check Parks Tasmania alerts the morning you go. Annual maintenance is usually late June / early July — a full stop, verify dates.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Do I need an extra walk permit?

No extra walk permit for established day walks. You still need a Parks Pass and a ferry booking.

Can I take a bike to the summit?

No. Parks Tasmania: leave bikes at the signed point about 2 km past the Fossil Cliffs junction and continue on foot.

Can I add Mount Maria the same day?

No. Different start near Counsel Creek, about 8 hours published walking, still a scramble. Pick one.

What if the wind is up?

Skip the steep summit route. Fossil Cliffs is the neighbour Plan B. Darlington township still counts.
