Left Hobart too late for the ferry: Plan B

Maria Island is a 75–90 minute drive to Triabunna plus a booked passenger ferry. What to do when you miss the sailing or would land with no walk clock. Desk research, not walked.

From Hobart, Triabunna is about 75–90 minutes in light traffic. Check-in at Maria Island Gateway is not the same as jogging onto a Sydney ferry. Encounter Maria Island: bookings essential; passenger numbers may be limited in busy periods.

If you miss it, stay on the mainland. The East Coast still exists. The island will still be there on a sailing you can actually finish.

Desk research, not walked. This page is for the morning you slept in, hit A3 traffic, or booked a sailing that leaves you with no island hours. It is not a guarantee of extra boats.

Mainland Plan B

Stay in Triabunna or Orford, walk a beach, eat, re-book the next sailing. Do not invent a private charter as if it were the official ferry.

Winter timetables reduce mid-week sailings. The annual maintenance closure (usually late June / early July — verify) is a full stop, not a “maybe they will run a boat.”

Hobart day tours that include the ferry exist — they are not Bishop and Clerk unless the itinerary says so. Read island hours before you buy a seat.

What a late landing actually allows

If you still make a sailing with a short island span: Darlington township, Commissariat, wildlife at 2 m. Maybe Fossil Cliffs if you protect the reverse clock. No Bishop and Clerk. No Mount Maria. No McRaes Isthmus.

Painted Cliffs only if a low-tide window still sits inside those hours. High tide plus a late ferry is a double miss — run the high-tide Plan B, not a scramble.

Same-day adult fare reviewed $59 on 26 August 2026 — verify live. Bookings essential. Parks Pass still required if you land.

Gateway check-in is part of the clock

Maria Island Gateway, Triabunna — (03) 6123 4040. Hours vary seasonally. Arrive early. This is where passes, camping payments and information actually happen.

Fuel and supermarket: Triabunna for last-stop food; Sorell on the Hobart drive. Nothing to buy on the island.

Park at the ferry / Gateway precinct. Do not leave valuables visible. No visitor cars on Maria Island.

Do not compress the Grade 4

Bishop and Clerk is 11 km, Grade 4, 4–5 hours walking plus scramble. Published time is not jetty-to-jetty. A later sailing does not make the mountain shorter.

Mount Maria is worse on a late clock: Counsel Creek start, about 8 hours. Overnight first, or skip it.

If the honest answer is “we would land with no walk clock,” stay on the mainland. Re-book. That is operator discipline, not a wasted holiday.

Re-book vs overnight

Re-book a same-day sailing only if island hours still work. Otherwise overnight on the mainland and take an early boat tomorrow.

Overnight island tickets differ in fare and luggage (adult $70 reviewed 26 August 2026 — verify). Darlington camp is paid at Gateway. Penitentiary is a separate booked bunkhouse. Neither is affiliated here.

This site does not invent live closures or extra sailings. Check encountermaria.com.au and Parks Tasmania alerts the morning you leave — and again if you miss the first plan.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I drive onto the island?

No public vehicle access. Foot or bike after the passenger ferry (or private boat under separate rules).

Will they hold the boat?

Plan as if they will not. Confirm the live timetable on encountermaria.com.au. This website is not a booking desk.

Can I still do Bishop and Clerk on a later sailing?

Only if the remaining island hours still hold 4–5 hours walking plus scramble plus a last-ferry buffer. Usually a late leave means Darlington plus one short icon — or stay on the mainland.

Do I still need a Parks Pass if I miss the ferry?

Not for a mainland afternoon in Triabunna or Orford. If you re-book and sail, yes — including private boat or plane arrivals. The pass is not the ferry ticket.
