If you are still on the island when the last Encounter Maria Island sailing leaves, you need food, a legal place to sleep, and honesty. Not walked.

If you are still on the ridge, the platform, or the isthmus when you should be at Darlington jetty, the plan has already failed. What follows is damage control, not a clever hack.
If you are already late
Talk to rangers / Gateway process as published — this independent site cannot book you a bed. Penitentiary is a separate booked product. Darlington camping is paid at the Gateway in standard descriptions and is not a secret overflow hotel.
Emergency: 000. Reception is patchy. Emergency+ when you have signal. Do not treat a blog as rescue.
Stay visible, stay off cliff edges, stay off the water. The problem is a missed sailing, not an invitation to invent a night walk.
Pack this before you ever need it
All food for longer than the advertised island hours. Water treatment. Headlamp. Layers. Rubbish bag. A stove if camping is even a remote possibility.
Overnight ferry tickets have different fares and luggage rules. If you only bought a same-day return, do not assume extra bags or a spare bunk exist for you.

How people miss it
Bishop and Clerk without a buffer. Painted Cliffs wait-for-the-next-tide. Fossil Cliffs plus “one more lookout.” Riding toward McRaes on a day-return ticket.
Published walk times are not jetty-to-jetty times. Add scramble, tide wait, photos, and the walk back to Darlington.
Winter daylight is shorter. Mid-week sailings can thin out. Verify encountermaria.com.au the morning you leave.
Legal beds versus wishful thinking
Planned overnight: pay at Gateway for Darlington camp, or book the Penitentiary through official channels. Parks Pass still required. None of that is affiliated here.
Southern camps (Frenchs Farm, Encampment Cove) are published as free with a Parks Pass, no bookings, treat rainwater — verify. They are not closer to the ferry. You still have to get north in the morning.
Do not sleep in vehicles — there are no visitor cars on the island. Do not break into buildings. Do not light a banned fire.
Next morning
Confirm the next sailing. Pack rubbish out. Treat water. Do not stack Mount Maria as punishment for missing yesterday’s boat.
If someone is injured or overdue: 000, Emergency+, rangers as published. A PLB is optional planning for remote south — not a substitute for turning around on time.
The honest fix is the buffer you should have built yesterday. Use the itineraries on this site before the next trip, not as a eulogy after the last sailing.

Will the ferry wait?
Plan as if it will not. Confirm the live timetable. Do not use this website as a guarantee of extra sailings.
Can I sleep in a building without a booking?
Penitentiary is a separate booked bunkhouse. Do not treat historic buildings as overflow hotels. Talk to rangers / Gateway process as published.
Is Darlington camping a walk-up hotel?
Standard descriptions: pay at Gateway; no advance general sites; first-come / register on arrival. Fees apply. Confirm live. This site does not take camping bookings and never affiliates them.
What about Frenchs Farm if I missed the boat?
Southern camps are a self-sufficient overnight plan, not a last-minute sprint from the jetty at dusk. You still need food, water treatment and a legal camp. The next ferry still leaves from Darlington.
