Overnight at Darlington

2 days / 1 nightBest for: Wildlife at dawn/dusk, two walks, no last-ferry panic on day one

Overnight ferry ticket (different fare and luggage rules). Camp at Darlington (paid at Gateway) or book the Penitentiary. Next day: Bishop and Clerk or a tide window without sprinting.

Overnight return fares and luggage allowances differ from same-day return — verify encountermaria.com.au. Reviewed 26 August 2026: overnight return adult $70 — always verify live.

Darlington camping: pay at Gateway; no advance general site booking in standard descriptions. Penitentiary is a separate booked bunkhouse. Southern free camps are a different plan.

Parks Pass is still required. Daily Pass commonly published $49.15/vehicle — verify live; a Holiday or Annual pass may make more sense if you are already touring Tasmania. Never affiliate Parks Pass, camping, Penitentiary or the ferry.

Not walked for this URL. Day one is township plus one coastal icon without a last-ferry sprint. Day two is Bishop and Clerk if wind allows, or a morning tide window. Do not stack both summits.

Track status, ferry seats, fares, tide windows and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A booked sailing is not a café, a shop, or a later ferry you can invent.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Ticket, pass, roof

Overnight ferry booked — different fare and luggage from same-day (adult overnight reviewed $70 on 26 Aug 2026; verify live). Parks Pass held. If camping: pay at Gateway; standard descriptions say no advance general sites. If Penitentiary: official bunkhouse booking confirmed (Sheffield VIC is a published booking point in third-party notes — verify live). Fuel stove packed if camping. Screenshot alerts.

  2. Day 1 morning

    Hobart → Gateway → sailing

Check-in at Maria Island Gateway — (03) 6123 4040. Confirm overnight luggage limits. Trolleys at the jetty appear in some notes — confirm current practice. No visitor cars. This is still a Parks Pass day.

  3. Day 1 afternoon

    Settle, then one short walk

Pitch or dump packs at camp / Penitentiary precinct. Township plus Painted Cliffs (if tide) or Fossil Cliffs. Do not start Bishop and Clerk late on arrival day — that is how day-two energy dies. Wildlife at 2 m. Treat water. Pack rubbish as you go.

  4. Evening

    Darlington night

No shops. Eat what you carried. Fuel stove default; campfires restricted/banned in many situations — verify. Quiet in the World Heritage precinct. Headlamp. Wombats on the grass are not a petting zoo. Limited mobile; 000 needs reception.

  5. Day 2 morning

One long walk — pick one

Bishop and Clerk if wind allows, with a real last-ferry buffer (11 km, Grade 4, 4–5 hours walking). Or a morning Painted Cliffs tide window. Mount Maria only if you started early enough for an ~8-hour Grade 4 plus sailing — usually you did not, and that is fine. Do not stack both summits.

  6. Day 2 midday

    Turnaround culture

Agree the reverse clock before you leave camp. If wind rises on the columns, Fossil Cliffs is still a walk. Overnight is not permission to miss the sailing.

  7. Day 2 afternoon / evening

    Pack out and sail

Every scrap of rubbish off the island. Be at the jetty with a buffer. Do not invent a second summit after lunch. A3 dusk wildlife on the drive home still applies. If you wanted the south island, that is a different itinerary.

Gateway & access tips

  • Car stays in Triabunna. Overnight ticket includes extra luggage — confirm limits.
  • Gateway / ferry precinct parking — not on the island.
  • Do not leave valuables visible. Closest beds if you skip the island night: Triabunna, then Orford.
  • Pay camping at Gateway in standard descriptions — not a hotel widget.
  • Penitentiary is a separate official booking, not walk-up.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Trying to do Mount Maria and Bishop and Clerk
  • Same-day return ticket with day-return luggage rules
  • Arriving without a stove (camping) or without a Penitentiary booking (roofed)
  • Southern free camps — that is the two-day south plan
  • Starting Bishop and Clerk at dusk on arrival day
  • Assuming Darlington has a shop or bins

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • First-timers who want wildlife at dawn without a last-ferry panic on day one
  • Walkers who want Bishop and Clerk with a real start clock
  • Not people hoping Darlington is a hotel with a kitchen they did not book

Two roofs, one pass

  • Parks Pass is entry. Camping is paid at Gateway. Penitentiary is a booked bunkhouse.
  • Southern camps are free with a pass in published descriptions — different itinerary.
  • None of those products are affiliated on this site.

Decision gates

  • No stove and no Penitentiary booking: you do not have an overnight
  • Gale on day two: township + Fossil Cliffs, not ego on the columns
  • Behind clock at lunch on day two: reverse for the sailing

What success looks like

  • Two walks or one walk done well — not two summits stacked
  • Rubbish off the island
  • On the booked return sailing
