Tide window: Painted Cliffs first
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island the morning you go
Build the day around the platform, not around a summit. If the tide is wrong, this plan becomes Fossil Cliffs + Darlington — not a scramble.

Parks Tasmania: Painted Cliffs rock platform is safest within about two hours of low tide; no clifftop access.
Desk research, not walked. Confirm tides at the Gateway / on-island notices. Do not guess from a random app alone.
This is still a ferry day: Parks Pass plus Encounter Maria Island booking. Same-day return adult $59 reviewed 26 August 2026 — verify live. No extra walk permit.
If low tide sits outside your sailing span, do not run this plan. Switch to Fossil Cliffs and the township. A high-tide landing is not a failure of the island — it is a failure of that one platform.
Track status, ferry seats, fares, tide windows and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A booked sailing is not a café, a shop, or a later ferry you can invent.

Timeline
Night before
Confirm the window sits inside the ferry
Screenshot tide notes (Gateway / on-island QR, not a random app alone) and the Encounter Maria Island timetable. If the ~2-hour low-tide window does not sit inside your island hours, do not run this plan — switch to same-day ferry with Fossil Cliffs as the icon. Parks Pass held. Same-day ticket, not overnight luggage rules.
06:30–08:30
Hobart → Gateway (verify against YOUR sailing)
Drive A3. Fuel/food at Sorell or Triabunna. Check in at Maria Island Gateway — (03) 6123 4040. Grip shoes on. Food packed. No shops on the island. Confirm last return before you board.
Sailing (~45 min)
Triabunna → Darlington
Passenger ferry only. Same-day adult fare reviewed $59 on 26 August 2026 — verify live. Parks Pass is separate. No visitor cars.
Late morning
Straight to the platform
Walk south from Darlington (~4.3 km return, Grade 3 — verify signs). If the platform is awash, reverse immediately. Parks Tasmania: no access from the clifftop. Wet sandstone is slick. This walk is the colour product, not a warm-up for a scramble.
Midday
Township after the colour
Commissariat, Penitentiary exterior, Coffee Palace, brick kilns, wildlife at 2 m. Eat what you carried. World Heritage hour still counts if the platform was underwater — you just used Fossil Cliffs instead.
Afternoon
Optional Fossil Cliffs only with buffer
Add Fossil Cliffs only if the clock still works. Do not add Bishop and Clerk unless you still have a full Grade 4 buffer — usually you do not on a tide-first island span. Do not wait for a second tide on a last sailing.
Hard reverse
Jetty with time to spare
The last sailing is the stop. Reverse early. Headlamp only if you were foolish about daylight — this plan should not need one.
Evening
A3 wildlife buffer
Triabunna then Hobart. Dusk wildlife on the highway is real. If the colour mattered more than a compressed day, book overnight Darlington next time and hold a morning tide without sprinting.

- Stacking tide wait plus a Grade 4
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Photographers and first-timers who actually have a low-tide window
- Mixed groups who will reverse if the platform is awash
- Not for anyone treating the cliffs as a 20-minute add-on after a late sailing
Tide rules
- Safest within about two hours of low tide — Parks Tasmania.
- No clifftop access. Reverse if awash.
- Gateway and on-island QR boards beat a Hobart app guess.
Decision gates
- Window outside ferry span: Fossil Cliffs + township, not this H1
- Platform awash on arrival: reverse, do not invent a scramble
- Clock gone after the colour: skip Fossil Cliffs too
What success looks like
- Colour on the platform or an honest Plan B, not a rescue story
- On the booked return sailing
- No clifftop experiment
