Same-day ferry: Darlington + one icon
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island the morning you go
The honest day-return: Gateway check-in, ferry to Darlington, township loop, one coastal icon, last-ferry buffer. Not Bishop and Clerk unless you left Hobart early and the wind is down.

Most visitors are day visitors. Success is one precinct plus one walk, not every named cliff on the map.
From Hobart budget about 75–90 minutes to Triabunna, Gateway check-in (arrive early — operator asks for advance booking), ~45 minutes on the water, then a hard reverse clock for the last sailing. Verify times on encountermaria.com.au the morning you leave.
Three fee systems, never merged: Tasmania Parks Pass (Daily Pass commonly published $49.15/vehicle — verify live); camping and Penitentiary if you were overnighting, which you are not on this plan; Encounter Maria Island ferry (same-day return adult $59 reviewed 26 August 2026 — verify live). This site never affiliates those products.
This itinerary is planning guidance only — desk research, not walked for this URL. No shops on the island. Pack food, treat water, pack rubbish out. Keep 2 m from wildlife.
Track status, ferry seats, fares, tide windows and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A booked sailing is not a café, a shop, or a later ferry you can invent.

Timeline
Night before
Bookings, pass, tide, Plan A / Plan B
Say the plan out loud: Plan A = Darlington plus Painted Cliffs if the low-tide window sits inside your island hours. Plan B = Darlington plus Fossil Cliffs. Ferry booked (same-day return, not overnight luggage rules). Parks Pass held or added at booking / Gateway. Screenshot parks.tas.gov.au alerts and encountermaria.com.au timetable on home Wi-Fi. Pack all food — there is no café. Sleep early; Gateway check-in is not a jog-on city ferry.
06:00–07:30
Leave Hobart
About 75–90 minutes to Triabunna on the A3 in light traffic — verify your sailing, not this clock. Snack packed. Final check of alerts and the ferry. A late café stop in Hobart is how you inherit a shorter island day. If someone is already exhausted, downgrade to township-only now, not at the jetty.
08:00–09:30
Sorell / Triabunna services → Gateway check-in
Last reliable supermarket/fuel scale is often Sorell; Triabunna has the Gateway. Check in at Maria Island Gateway — (03) 6123 4040 — hours vary. Parks Pass on you even though there are no visitor cars. Carry water treatment, layers, rubbish bag. Confirm last-return sailing before you board.
Sailing (~45 min)
Triabunna → Darlington jetty
Encounter Maria Island passenger ferry. Bookings essential; numbers can cap in peak. Same-day adult fare reviewed $59 on 26 August 2026 — verify live. This is not Parks Pass. No public vehicles on arrival. Trolleys appear in some overnight notes — day visitors still walk.
Late morning
Darlington World Heritage hour
Penitentiary exterior, Commissariat Store, Coffee Palace, brick kilns, wildlife at ≥2 m. This is the World Heritage precinct (Australian Convict Sites, 2010). Do not skip it to “save time” for a summit this plan does not include. Eat what you packed.
Midday
One icon — tide or fossils
Painted Cliffs only if the ~2-hour low-tide window is real and you can reverse with ferry buffer. Otherwise Fossil Cliffs (cement-works ruins, Permian platform, a look at Bishop and Clerk without the scramble). Not both plus a Grade 4. If the platform is awash, reverse — no clifftop workaround.
Afternoon
Hard reverse to the jetty
Be at Darlington with time to spare. The last sailing is not a suggestion. Reverse early if the icon ran long. Do not add “one more lookout” or start Bishop and Clerk. Missing the boat only works if you already packed an overnight you are allowed to take — see the missed-ferry article.
Evening
Triabunna → A3 → Hobart
Wildlife dusk on the Tasman Highway is real. Stop for fuel/food if anyone is fading. Honest debrief: if this felt too compressed, the next trip is overnight Darlington, not a faster scramble. Annual maintenance (usually late June / early July — verify) is a full stop, not a maybe.

Gateway & access tips
- Park at the Triabunna ferry / Gateway precinct — not on the island.
- Do not leave valuables visible in the car park.
- No visitor cars on Maria Island. Bikes: confirm bike-on-ferry rules with Encounter Maria Island.
- Arrive at Gateway with check-in buffer — this is not a last-second hop-on.
- Fuel/food at Sorell or Triabunna before you sail.
- Screenshot the return sailing on home Wi-Fi; coverage is patchy on the island.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Bishop and Clerk on this same-day shape
- Mount Maria
- McRaes Isthmus as a day return
- Waiting for a second Painted Cliffs tide on the last sailing
- Stacking township + Painted Cliffs + Fossil Cliffs + a scramble
- Leaving Hobart after a late café when you still “wanted the summit”
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First ferry day from Hobart with mixed fitness
- Groups who will actually book the sailing and hold a Parks Pass
- Anyone who can treat Darlington plus one icon as a complete day
- Not for people who still want Bishop and Clerk after a late leave
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If the sailing is unbooked or winter/maintenance closed: stay on the mainland — see left-Hobart-too-late Plan B
- If Painted Cliffs tide sits outside island hours: Fossil Cliffs, not a clifftop scramble
- If energy fails at the jetty: township and wildlife only still counts
- If someone starts talking about Bishop and Clerk after 11am: that is a different itinerary
Fee split
- Parks Pass is not the ferry ticket.
- Camping and Penitentiary are not this day plan.
- Same-day adult ferry fare reviewed $59 on 26 August 2026 — verify live on encountermaria.com.au.
What success looks like
- Whole group on the booked return sailing
- One World Heritage hour plus one honest icon
- Rubbish off the island; wildlife left at 2 m

- Darlington Township WalkDarlington Probation Station is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property (listed 2010). Short, formed, and the honest first-timer loop when the ferry has just landed. Not walked for this guide.
- Painted CliffsShort walk from Darlington to a tidal sandstone platform. Parks Tasmania: access is safest within two hours of low tide; no access from the clifftop. Confirm tides at the Gateway / on-island notices. Not walked for this guide.
- Fossil CliffsFrom the Commissariat / ferry precinct north past industrial ruins to fossil-bearing limestone cliffs. Often combined with wildlife on the grasslands. Not the Bishop and Clerk summit. Not walked for this guide.
