Two-day south: Frenchs Farm / isthmus
Guide updated · verify Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island the morning you go
Frenchs Farm and Encampment Cove: free with a valid parks pass, no bookings, basic toilets, treat rainwater. Not Three Capes. Not a day-return.

Island circuits are built by combining day walks and camps. There is no official hut-to-hut product on Maria Island.
Commercial guided multi-day walks exist as private operators — list them on /tours/ only. Official camping is never affiliated here.
Overnight ferry ticket (adult $70 reviewed 26 August 2026 — verify live) plus a Parks Pass. Southern camps: published as free with that pass, no bookings, long-drop toilets, untreated rainwater. Darlington campground is a different, paid camp. Penitentiary is roofed and booked separately.
Not walked for this URL. Bikes make the isthmus realistic — confirm bike-on-ferry rules with Encounter Maria Island. Haunted Bay is a long day from the camps, not a Darlington lunch break. Mount Maria from Counsel Creek needs its own 8-hour budget — do not stack it with Haunted Bay.
Track status, ferry seats, fares, tide windows and closures change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. A booked sailing is not a café, a shop, or a later ferry you can invent.

Timeline
Night before
Self-sufficiency check
Overnight ferry booked (adult overnight reviewed $70 on 26 Aug 2026 — verify live). Parks Pass held. Stove, water treatment, food for every meal, rubbish bags, layers, shelter. Optional PLB. Screenshot maps and the return timetable. No shops on the island. If you cannot carry this list, run overnight Darlington instead.
Day 1 morning
Gateway, sailing, leave Darlington
Check in at Maria Island Gateway — (03) 6123 4040. Confirm luggage and bike-on-ferry rules with Encounter Maria Island. Fill water, treat it. Township is not the product today — take the southbound track or ride.
Day 1 afternoon
South to Frenchs Farm / Encampment Cove
Published: free camps with a valid parks pass, no bookings, long-drop toilets, untreated rainwater — verify Parks Tasmania. McRaes Isthmus twin beaches if daylight allows. Fuel stove. Fire bans. Do not push to Haunted Bay on arrival day unless the day shape is real.
Evening
Southern camp
This is not a hut with a ranger shop and not Three Capes. Pack rubbish. Limited mobile. 000 needs reception. Emergency+ when you have signal. Quiet. Treat every drop you drink.
Day 2 morning
One deeper objective — or start north
Point Lesueur / Haunted Bay only with a real day shape. Or Mount Maria from Counsel Creek only if that is the day’s one hard walk (Grade 4, ~8 hours, ~16 km — verify). Or start north toward Darlington. Do not stack Haunted Bay and Mount Maria.
Day 2 midday
Turnaround for the jetty
The ferry still leaves from Darlington. Budget the ride or walk north as part of the day, not as an afterthought. If you are tired, skip the extra ruin and move.
Day 2 afternoon / evening
North to Darlington and sail
Pack every scrap of rubbish off the island. Be at the jetty with a buffer. A3 dusk wildlife on the mainland drive still applies. If this felt remote enough, you do not owe the itinerary a third night you did not pack for.
