Why every visit starts here

Darlington is the jetty, the World Heritage precinct, the campground, the Penitentiary and the start of the short walks. Peak ferry days are busy here and quieter once you leave the settlement.

Layered history is real: Tasmanian Aboriginal occupation, convict probation station, later industrial cement works, national park from 1971. Keep the language factual. This site does not speak for Tasmanian Aboriginal organisations or Parks Tasmania.

Not walked for this URL. Treat this page as an operator’s map of published logistics, not a field diary. Confirm live notes at Maria Island Gateway — (03) 6123 4040 — and on parks.tas.gov.au the morning you sail.

Camping and the Penitentiary

Darlington Campground: fees apply, pay at Maria Island Gateway in Triabunna. Standard descriptions: no advance bookings for general camping (first-come / register on arrival). Facilities are basic; wastewater works have affected showers at times — verify current shower status.

Penitentiary: separate bunkhouse-style roofed product, booked through official channels (Sheffield Visitor Information Centre is the published booking point in third-party notes — confirm live). No smoking in accommodation precincts.

Neither product is affiliated on this site. Never book camping or Penitentiary through a hotel widget. Southern free camps (Frenchs Farm, Encampment Cove) are a different plan — not overflow for a missed Darlington site.

Three fee systems — never merge them

System A is a Tasmania Parks Pass. Required for entry, including private boat or plane. Daily Pass planning figure commonly published $49.15/vehicle (up to 8) — confirm live at the official fees page. Buy online, at the Gateway, or as a ferry add-on. Carry the pass even though there are no visitor cars on the island.

System B is camping and the Penitentiary. Darlington camp is paid at the Gateway. Penitentiary is a booked bunkhouse. Neither is “included” in the pass or the ferry ticket.

System C is the Encounter Maria Island ferry. Reviewed 26 August 2026 on encountermaria.com.au: same-day return adult $59, overnight return adult $70 — always verify live. Bookings essential. This site never affiliates Parks Pass, camping, Penitentiary or the ferry.

No shops, treat water, pack rubbish out

There is nothing to buy at Darlington. Pack the entire island day — food, layers, rubbish bag, water treatment. Taps, where they exist, are not drinking water you should trust untreated. Boil or purify.

Annual island maintenance is usually late June / early July. That is a full stop, not a maybe. Verify exact dates each year on Parks Tasmania alerts. Winter sailings can thin mid-week — check encountermaria.com.au, not a memory of summer.

Limited mobile. Do not invent a coverage map from this page. 000 needs reception where it exists. Install Emergency+. Screenshot the timetable and park notes on home Wi-Fi before you lose signal.

First hour, wildlife, reverse clock

The honest first hour is the township walk: jetty, Commissariat Store, Penitentiary exterior, Coffee Palace, brick kilns, wildlife on the grass. Keep at least 2 m from wombats, geese, kangaroos and any devil sightings. Do not feed. Do not chase photographs into burrows.

Painted Cliffs is south and needs a low-tide window. Fossil Cliffs and Bishop and Clerk country sit north and east. Pick one extra walk after the precinct, not every named cliff on the map.

The last ferry is the hard stop. Be back at the jetty with a buffer. An unplanned overnight only works if camping or Penitentiary rules still let you stay — confirm at the Gateway before you ever need that option.
