Self-sufficiency
Treat water. Pack rubbish out. Fuel stove. PLB is a reasonable note. This site does not invent mobile coverage maps. 000 needs reception where it exists; Emergency+ when you have signal.
No shops, no ranger kiosk, no bins. Rainwater at southern camps is untreated. Fuel stove is the default; campfires are restricted or banned in many situations — check fire bans.
Not walked for this URL. Overnight ferry tickets differ in fare and luggage from same-day return. Confirm bike-on-ferry rules with Encounter Maria Island.
Frenchs Farm and Encampment Cove
Published descriptions: no bookings, free with a valid Tasmania Parks Pass, basic / long-drop toilets, untreated rainwater. Confirm on Parks Tasmania. This site never affiliates camping.
Darlington camping is separate and paid at Maria Island Gateway. Penitentiary is a third, roofed product. Do not treat southern camps as overflow for a missed Darlington site or an unbooked bunkhouse.
First-come at free camps still means you arrive with a plan B if sites are occupied. Self-sufficiency is the filter, not the beach photos.
McRaes Isthmus and deeper south
McRaes Isthmus is the narrow twin-beach waist of the island. Bikes make the distance from Darlington realistic. Walking it on a day-return ticket is how people miss the last ferry.
Point Lesueur ruins and Haunted Bay are deeper southern objectives — long days from Frenchs Farm or Encampment Cove, not Darlington add-ons. Do not stack them with Mount Maria from a day ticket.
There is no official hut-to-hut walk. Commercial guided multi-day walks (for example Maria Island Walk) are private operators — list them on /tours/ only. Official camping is never affiliated here.
Mount Maria from this country
Mount Maria starts south of Darlington near Counsel Creek — not at the jetty. Published notes: about 16 km return, Grade 4, about 8 hours walk, high point around 711 m. Confirm live distance and bike rules.
An overnight at Darlington or a southern camp is the honest way to hold an 8-hour walk plus a last-ferry buffer. A same-day ferry plus Mount Maria is a common clock failure.
Do not pair Mount Maria with Bishop and Clerk on the same calendar day. Turn around before the boulder scramble if cloud, wind or time fails.
Ferry clock and communications
The return ferry still leaves from Darlington. Budget the ride or walk north as part of the day, not as a five-minute afterthought. Winter timetables can drop mid-week sailings — verify live.
Annual maintenance is usually late June / early July — a full stop. Verify dates. Construction or infrastructure alerts have appeared in recent years — check Parks Tasmania alerts; this site does not invent closures.
Limited mobile south of the settlement. Screenshot maps and the timetable. A PLB or satellite messenger is optional planning, not a substitute for turning around.

Do I book Frenchs Farm?
Published descriptions: no bookings, free with a valid parks pass. Confirm on Parks Tasmania. Darlington camping is separate and paid at the Gateway.
Is Encampment Cove the same as Darlington campground?
No. Southern camps are published as free with a Parks Pass. Darlington is a paid camp. Penitentiary is roofed and booked separately.
Can I do the isthmus on a same-day ferry?
It is a common way to miss the last sailing. Overnight is the honest plan. If you only have a day-return ticket, keep to Darlington plus one coastal icon.
Is there a Three Capes-style hut walk?
No. Island circuits are day walks plus camps. Commercial guided multi-day walks are private operators — see /tours/. Official camping is never affiliated here.
