Where to stay for Maria Island National Park

Stay on the island if that suits the trip — Darlington campground or the Penitentiary bunkhouse — so you are not racing the last ferry on day one. Commercial stays sit at Triabunna, Orford, Swansea, Hobart, Richmond and Sorell. Official camping: Parks Tasmania — Maria Island.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Parks Pass fees, official camping, Penitentiary bookings and the Encounter Maria Island ferry are never affiliated.

Inside the park

Official Darlington camping & Penitentiary

Separate from the Parks Pass and from the ferry. Darlington campground: fees apply; pay at Maria Island Gateway in Triabunna. Standard descriptions: no advance bookings for general camping. Facilities are basic; shower status has varied — verify. Penitentiary: booked bunkhouse-style roofed product through official channels — confirm live. No smoking in accommodation precincts. Southern camps (Frenchs Farm, Encampment Cove) are a different, self-sufficient product, published as free with a valid parks pass — verify. This site does not affiliate park camping, Penitentiary, Parks Pass or the ferry.

Swansea

Further north on the A3. A bed if you are combining Freycinet country with a Maria Island sailing — not a substitute for Gateway check-in time.
