Things to do on Maria Island

Access is a booked passenger ferry from Triabunna (~45 minutes to Darlington; no public vehicles). Most first visits revolve around Darlington World Heritage plus Painted Cliffs when the tide window is real, or Fossil Cliffs as Plan B. Bishop and Clerk is a different sport — Grade 4, early ferry, last-sailing buffer. Mount Maria and the south island are overnight products. Do not try to collect every named cliff on a first visit.

Day one rule

Pick one primary product: Darlington plus a tide window, or Bishop and Clerk with an early sailing. Do not collect every named cliff on a first ferry day.

Tide / energy bail-out

High tide at Painted Cliffs → Fossil Cliffs and the township. Gale on the columns → skip the scramble. Bail-outs are competence, not a failed visit.

Hard walk / last-ferry filter

Bishop and Clerk and Mount Maria are different days. The last sailing is a hard stop. Overnight south needs stove, treated water and an overnight ticket — not a day-return sprint.

  1. 1

    Darlington World Heritage precinct

    Grade 2 · first hour · heritage + wombats

The classic first hour: Darlington Probation Station (Australian Convict Sites, listed 2010), Commissariat, Coffee Palace, Penitentiary exterior, brick kilns and wildlife on the grass. A complete day-return can stop here plus one short walk and still succeed.

  2. 2

    Painted Cliffs

Grade 3 · tide window · from Darlington

The colour product: tidal sandstone platform about 4.3 km return, Grade 3. Parks Tasmania: safest within about two hours of low tide; no clifftop access. High tide is physics, not a locked gate.

  3. 3

    Bishop and Clerk

    Grade 4 · early ferry · last-ferry clock

The flagship day walk: 11 km return, Grade 4, 4–5 hours from Darlington, dolerite scramble, unfenced cliffs. Avoid the summit in high wind. Last ferry is the hard stop — not Mount Maria on the same calendar day.

  4. 4

    Fossil Cliffs

    Grade 3 · coastal · wildlife country

Permian fossils, cement-works ruins and a look toward Bishop and Clerk without the scramble. Honest Plan B when wind kills the summit or the Painted Cliffs tide is wrong.

  5. 5

    Wildlife watching (distance first)

2-metre rule · not a zoo · dusk quieter south

Wombats, Forester kangaroos, Cape Barren geese, Tasmanian devils. Keep at least 2 m. Never feed. Peak ferry days crowd Darlington lawns — that is not an invitation to close in.

  6. 6

    Cycling

Ferry luggage rules · signed bike limits · south island

Bikes make the isthmus and southern camps realistic. They are not a shortcut to the Bishop and Clerk scramble — leave bikes at the signed limit. Confirm bike-on-ferry fees and luggage rules with Encounter Maria Island. Foot still covers Darlington, Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs.

  7. 7

Beaches, McRaes Isthmus & marine reserve

Tide and weather · cold water · overnight for the isthmus

White sand and cold clear water at Darlington Bay and the twin beaches at McRaes. Maria Island Marine Reserve is snorkel/dive context above-water from shore — not a shop and not a same-day ferry add-on to Haunted Bay. The isthmus is an overnight product.

  8. 8

Harder / overnight (Mount Maria & southern camps)

    Grade 4 / self-sufficient · overnight ferry ticket

Mount Maria is a Grade 4 full-day (~16 km, ~8 hours) from Counsel Creek — not a first day-return. Frenchs Farm and Encampment Cove are free with a Parks Pass, no bookings, treat rainwater. Darlington camp and the Penitentiary are different, paid products. Pack food. There is no hut-to-hut walk.

All walks on this guide

6 practical walk pages with logistics. Always confirm on Parks Tasmania and the official ferry.

  • Bishop and Clerk — hard · 4–5 hours walk (3–5 hours by bike to the signed bike limit, then on foot)
  • Mount Maria — hard · About 8 hours walk (shorter if riding the lower section — verify bike rules)
  • Painted Cliffs — moderate · Allow 1.5–2.5 hours plus a tide wait — not a “quick look” if you miss low tide
  • Fossil Cliffs — moderate · Allow 1.5–2.5 hours
  • Darlington township — easy · 30–90 minutes depending on museums and wildlife stops
  • Isthmus / southern camps — moderate · Overnight (or a very long day you should not invent on a day-return ferry)
