Frenchs Farm, Encampment Cove & McRaes Isthmus

No hut-to-hut track like Three Capes. You combine day walking, bikes and two free camps (Frenchs Farm and Encampment Cove) with a valid parks pass. Treat water, pack rubbish out, no bookings. Not walked for this guide.

Do not pair: Do not stack Mount Maria and Haunted Bay from Darlington on a day ticket.

Turnaround: Frenchs Farm is a clean overnight turnaround. Haunted Bay is not a Darlington day.

  • Riding to the isthmus on a day return and missing the last ferry.
  • Grade 3 long island travel — overnight self-sufficiency, not a jetty stroll
  • Overnight (or a very long day you should not invent on a day-return ferry)
  • Multi-hour ride or walk south from Darlington; Haunted Bay is a long day from southern camps (verify)
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Twin beaches at McRaes Isthmus, Point Lesueur ruins, free southern camps with a Parks Pass

Distance, grade, time, tide windows and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you go.

Where you start

Darlington, then south on island tracks

Bikes make the isthmus realistic. Confirm current bike-on-ferry fees with Encounter Maria Island.

How to get there

  1. Overnight ferry ticket (different fare and luggage rules from same-day return — verify encountermaria.com.au).
  2. Parks Pass. Southern camps: no bookings, basic/long-drop toilets, untreated rainwater.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Travel south from Darlington toward Frenchs Farm / Encampment Cove. McRaes Isthmus is the narrow twin-beach waist of the island.
  2. Point Lesueur ruins and Haunted Bay are deeper southern objectives — long days from the camps, not Darlington lunch breaks.
  3. There is no formal multi-day hut walk. Commercial guided multi-day walks (e.g. Maria Island Walk) are private operators — see /tours/, never affiliated as park fees.

What to expect

No hut-to-hut track like Three Capes. You combine day walking, bikes and two free camps — Frenchs Farm and Encampment Cove — with a valid parks pass. McRaes Isthmus is the twin-beach waist. Point Lesueur ruins and Haunted Bay sit deeper south.

Published camp notes: no bookings, free with a Parks Pass, basic / long-drop toilets, untreated rainwater. Verify on Parks Tasmania. Darlington campground is a different, paid camp. Penitentiary is a third roofed product.

Not walked for this guide. Self-sufficient food, fuel stove, rubbish out. Commercial guided multi-day walks are private operators — see /tours/, never affiliated as park fees.

Day shape and logistics

Overnight ferry ticket — different fare and luggage rules from same-day return. Verify encountermaria.com.au. Confirm bike-on-ferry fees with the operator. Bikes make the isthmus realistic; walking it on a day-return is a common clock failure.

Travel south from Darlington toward Frenchs Farm / Encampment Cove. Haunted Bay is a long day from the camps, not a Darlington lunch break. Mount Maria starts near Counsel Creek — do not stack it with Haunted Bay from a day ticket.

Treat rainwater. Pack rubbish out. Annual maintenance is usually late June / early July — verify. Winter sailings can thin mid-week.

Hazards, reverse, ferry buffer

Distance, weather, water treatment, isolation, patchy reception. Campfires restricted or banned in many situations. A PLB is a reasonable planning note — this site does not invent carrier coverage. 000 needs reception; Emergency+ when you have signal.

Frenchs Farm is a clean overnight turnaround. Reverse north in time for Darlington and the sailing you actually booked. The last ferry does not wait for an isthmus sunset.

Unplanned extra nights only work if camp rules still let you stay. No shops. If you did not pack food, you do not have a Plan B.

Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Painted Cliffs high-tide Plan B · Left Hobart too late.

Often paired with Mount Maria— only if energy and weather allow.
