Mount Maria

Full-day out-and-back from south of Darlington near Counsel Creek: woodland, then a final ~30 minutes of boulder scramble to the dolerite high point. Self-sufficient food and water. Not walked for this guide — planning from Parks Tasmania.

Do not pair: Do not pair with Bishop and Clerk on the same calendar day. Do not pair with a late last ferry on a day return.

Turnaround: Before the boulder scramble. Reverse is the whole product if weather or clock fails.

  • Treating published 8 hours as “we’ll be back for a 3pm ferry.” Walking time is not jetty-to-jetty time.
  • Stacking Mount Maria after Bishop and Clerk because both are “the peaks.”
  • Grade 4 — full-day commitment; rock scrambling on the final approach
  • About 8 hours walk (shorter if riding the lower section — verify bike rules)
  • 16 km return (verify signed distance on Parks Tasmania)
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Island high point (~711 m) with views south to twin bays and the Tasman Peninsula — not a first ferry day

Distance, grade, time, tide windows and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you go.

Where you start

South of Darlington, near the mouth of Counsel Creek

Different start from Bishop and Clerk. Still on foot or bike from the ferry — no visitor cars. Confirm the signed start on the island; do not invent a Darlington jetty start for this one.

How to get there

  1. Same ferry logistics as every Maria Island walk: Triabunna Gateway, Encounter Maria Island booking, Parks Pass, no public vehicles.
  2. An overnight at Darlington or a southern camp is the honest way to hold an 8-hour walk plus a last-ferry buffer. A same-day ferry plus Mount Maria is a common clock failure.
  3. Treat or carry all drinking water. Pack rubbish out.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Start south of Darlington near Counsel Creek. Gentle then steeper through open woodlands.
  2. Final stretch is scrambling over rocky debris and large boulders. Cooler temperatures at the top are normal.
  3. Summit views look south toward twin bays / McRaes country and, on a clear day, toward the Tasman Peninsula. Return the same way.

What to expect

Mount Maria is the island high point — a dolerite outcrop around 711 m in published descriptions. This guide uses 16 km return, Grade 4, about 8 hours walk from Parks Tasmania-style notes in the build brief. Confirm live distance, grade and bike rules on parks.tas.gov.au before you go — do not treat this page as the sign.

It is a different walk from Bishop and Clerk: longer, further south, still a scramble at the end. Wildlife on the lower tracks does not shorten the day.

Day shape and logistics

Start south of Darlington near the mouth of Counsel Creek. The shape is woodland first, then steeper, then a final half hour of large boulders.

Bike use on the lower section is sometimes published — verify the current signed bike limit. Summit approaches are on foot.

Food and water for the whole day. There is no hut, no kiosk, and no water you should drink untreated.

Hazards and reverse

Hazards: time, scramble, exposure, weather change, self-sufficiency. Sturdy shoes are not optional.

Out-and-back. Turn around before the boulder scramble if conditions deteriorate. The summit is not a ferry excuse.

The ferry still leaves from Darlington. An 8-hour walk plus the travel back to the jetty is not a mid-afternoon last sailing. Overnight at Darlington or a southern camp is the honest clock.

Pairing and clock

Do not pair Mount Maria with Bishop and Clerk on the same calendar day. Do not pair it with Haunted Bay from Darlington on a day ticket. Do not treat published 8 hours as jetty-to-jetty time.

McRaes Isthmus / Frenchs Farm country is the neighbour overnight, not a lunch add-on after the scramble. If you overnight south, the return ferry still needs a real northbound budget the next day.

Not walked for this guide. Check Parks Tasmania alerts, signed start near Counsel Creek, and encountermaria.com.au before you commit food and daylight to this one.

Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Painted Cliffs high-tide Plan B · Left Hobart too late.

Extra tips

  • This is not Bishop and Clerk with extra kilometres. Different start, longer day, still a scramble.
  • Overnight first if your ferry is a day return with a mid-afternoon last sailing — verify the timetable.
  • Turn around before the boulder scramble if cloud, wind or time fails.

Often paired with Isthmus / southern camps— only if energy and weather allow.
