Painted Cliffs
Guide updated · verify live track status with Parks Tasmania
Short walk from Darlington to a tidal sandstone platform. Parks Tasmania: access is safest within two hours of low tide; no access from the clifftop. Confirm tides at the Gateway / on-island notices. Not walked for this guide.
Do not pair: Do not pair a missed tide with “we’ll just do Bishop and Clerk instead” unless you still have a full Grade 4 buffer to the last ferry.
Turnaround: If the platform is awash, reverse. The township walk is the honest Plan B.
- Walking to the cliffs at high tide because the ferry landed then — you see a wall of water, not the platform.
- Adding Bishop and Clerk after a late tide window on a day return.
- Grade 3 — formed track plus a tidal rock platform
- Allow 1.5–2.5 hours plus a tide wait — not a “quick look” if you miss low tide
- About 4.3 km return (verify signed distance)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: The island’s colour photograph: swirling sandstone, safest within about two hours of low tide
Distance, grade, time, tide windows and open/closed status change — verify on Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you go.

Where you start
Darlington Settlement
South of the ferry precinct toward the sandstone coast. Tide is the decision, not fitness.
How to get there
- Same ferry + Parks Pass as every other island walk.
- Check tide information at Maria Island Gateway and on-island QR / noticeboards. Do not guess from a Hobart tide app without confirming how the park wants you to read it.
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk from Darlington to the cliffs. The platform is the product — swirling orange, red and cream sandstone.
- Stay off the clifftop approach. Parks Tasmania: no access to the Painted Cliffs from the clifftop.
- If you arrive outside the low-tide window, wait or reverse. Wet rock is slick. Do not invent a scramble around the point.
What to expect
Short walk from Darlington to a tidal sandstone platform — swirling orange, red and cream. Published notes: about 4.3 km return, Grade 3. Verify signed distance. The colour is the product; the clifftop is not a substitute view.
Parks Tasmania: access is safest within about two hours of low tide; no access from the clifftop. A high-tide ferry landing does not open the platform.
Not walked for this guide. Peak ferry days are busy on the approach; the platform still has wet-rock and wave risk even when it looks photogenic.
Day shape and logistics
Same ferry and Parks Pass as every island walk. Check tide information at Maria Island Gateway and on-island QR / noticeboards. Do not guess from a Hobart tide app without confirming how the park wants you to read it.
Walk south from the settlement. If you arrive outside the window, wait only if the last ferry still allows it — otherwise reverse. Township walk or Fossil Cliffs is the honest Plan B.
No toilets or water at the platform. Pack food and treated water. Overnight at Darlington is how you hold a morning tide without sprinting.
Hazards, reverse, ferry buffer
Wet sandstone is slick. Waves on the platform. Groups that linger past the window get trapped by water, not by a locked gate. Do not invent a scramble around the point or a clifftop descent.
Reverse if the platform is awash. A missed tide is not permission to start Bishop and Clerk at 2pm unless you still have a full Grade 4 buffer, low wind, and an early sailing.
The last ferry is the hard stop. Do not wait for “the next tide” on a day-return ticket. Screenshot the tide note before you lose reception.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · Painted Cliffs high-tide Plan B · Left Hobart too late.

Extra tips
- Tide first, photos second. A beautiful high-tide day is still a failed platform day.
- Pair with Darlington township or Fossil Cliffs only if the clock and tide both work.
- Wildlife on the track is not a reason to crowd wombats. Keep at least 2 m.
Often paired with Darlington township— only if energy and weather allow.
