A good visit is logistics plus restraint: a Parks Pass is not a ferry ticket, a ferry ticket is not a Penitentiary bed, and Darlington plus one coastal walk is already a complete day. Pick one primary walk, protect a last-ferry buffer, and verify Parks Tasmania and Encounter Maria Island before you invent a second summit after lunch.

Most messy Maria Island days are not “bad weather” — they are overstuffed plans: a late start, a missed tide, then an impulse Bishop and Clerk. Choose the shape that matches energy, daylight and the sailing you actually booked.
Township, wildlife, Painted Cliffs if the tide window is real, otherwise Fossil Cliffs. Bishop and Clerk off the menu unless you left Hobart early.
Build the island hours around the platform. If the tide is wrong, this becomes Fossil Cliffs + Darlington — not a scramble.
11 km, Grade 4, 4–5 hrs from Darlington. Early ferry. Skip the summit in high wind. Do not add Mount Maria.
Overnight ferry ticket. Camp (paid at Gateway) or book the Penitentiary. South island is a different, self-sufficient plan.
Hobart to Triabunna is typically ~75–90 minutes on the A3 in light traffic, then ~45 minutes on the water. The last ferry is a hard stop. These are planning ranges, not a clocked departure.
Darlington township, Commissariat, wildlife at 2 m. Maybe Fossil Cliffs if you protect the reverse clock. No Bishop and Clerk. Enough for mixed mobility if the ferry span is short.
Tide window for Painted Cliffs, then precinct. See the tide itinerary. Who should not squeeze this into a late sailing: anyone who still wants a Grade 4 walk.
Bishop and Clerk is the usual first full walk — early Hobart leave, low wind. Or Darlington plus one icon if you are not scrambling. Do not add Mount Maria.
Darlington camp or Penitentiary; or Frenchs Farm / Encampment Cove if you are self-sufficient. Who should not day-trip Bishop and Clerk from Hobart: late risers, high-wind days, anyone without a booked early ferry and a packed lunch.
